Walking the streets of San Francisco – It’s a New City

We’re in San Francisco, just walking around the streets, and the lyrics of a new Finn Miles songs keep ratcheting through my head. With so many people out on the walkways, and such a diverse crowd, the stretch of humanity is evident. San Francisco is both beautiful and desperate at the same time; a paradox – both hopeful and hopeless at the same time. Right now I hear sirens and cursing on the street, but when I look out the window I see beauty, warmth, and artistry stretching out over the brutal and tawdry scene below.

So here’s a song of hope for the city, that someday our cities might “get it right.”

It’s a New City

people are kindness
clean happy shameless
no one is living on the street

no more with lonely
no more with violence
no lies to divide us
promises keep

end of the waste bins
all parks and gardens
a hard day’s work
always brings us good sleep

up in the sunlight
peaceful and quiet
no motor cars
we just use our feet

up with the good times
problems forgotten
softly well spoken
words on our lips

lay in bed dreaming
of this our new city
I’m loving you
and you are loving me
